Abstract: Letters and other papers collected by William E. Uzzell of Atlanta, Ga. Included are the following: five letters, 1857, from David Bisset, Weldon, N.C., and Anderson, S.C., about railroad construction; Chatham County, N.C., legal documents, 1787-1822; letters from [I?] J. Howe, a Confederate soldier from South Carolina, and others about conditions at Camp Guerrin, S.C., and other Confederate and Union camps; letters from prisoners at Point Lookout, Md.; family and financial letters and other items, 1854-1880, of Daniel W. Jordan, a South Carolina planter; letters, 1840-1845, concerning tobacco processing in Lynchburg, Va.; letters, 1872-1901, to J. M. Sykes of Oxford, N.C., about Republican Party activities and other matters; and a diary kept by William Uzzell during the University of North Carolina’s “Transcontinental Student Tour” of 1930.

Collection Highlights: Included in Folders 7-8 (Miscellaneous Letters) is a letter from 22 April 1840 by George Tuthill of Pennsylvania to William Stone of Massachusetts, expressing concern that the election of Benjamin Harrison may jeopardize the abolitionist movement. There is also a letter (14 April 1855) from Samuel Roston in Independence, Missouri, commenting on a pro-slavery election victory in the Kansas Territory.

Abstract: Native of Connecticut, Episcopal minister in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee, and educator. Personal and family papers of Douglas and of his wife, Sarah (Tucker) Douglas, of Natchez, Miss., before and after their marriage in 1857. Correspondents were members of both families, scattered over a wide geographical range, including Connecticut, New Jersey, Louisiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee and Illinois, and attending several schools and colleges, including the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in the 1840s and the College of William and Mary in the 1850s. There are papers relating to the Episcopal Church in Connecticut, Louisiana, Tennessee, and especially in Dry Grove, Hinds County, Miss., where Douglas served as minister, 1871-1881, operated the Bishop Green Training School and Associate Mission, and edited the diocesan monthly. Correspondents include Bishop William Mercer Green, Oscar Kibbe, Leonidas Polk, and David Ker. Volumes include pocket diaries, 1855 and 1857, of Douglas in Connecticut and Waterproof, La., respectively; an album about student life at the University of Mississippi, ca. 1860; and notes made on ocean crossings to and from Europe in 1897, including comments on the weather, social activities, and fellow passengers.

Abstract: U.S. Marine Corps officer from South Carolina. Papers of and collected by William Curry Harllee include letters and documents, 1685-1899 (in part copies) of his ancestors, particularly the Harllee family of Mars Bluff and Little Rock, S.C., including a few letters from a South Carolinian in Kansas, 1853; letters from Andrew Turpin Harllee describing public events in Washington, D.C., in 1860; and letters from a soldier in the 8th South Carolina Regiment, C.S.A., in Virginia. From 1903 to 1918, the papers concern W. C. Harllee’s military career, particularly his interest in marksmanship, the National Rifle Association, and his duties in small arms training for the Navy and Marine Corps during World War I. Papers from 1919 relate to his interest in genealogy and preparation of a book of his findings. The families in which he was interested were based in North and South Carolina, Florida, and Virginia.

Correspondence in 1860 also discusses Southern secession, the Democratic Party, and the negative implications of Lincoln’s election.
