Kinston NC March 21 1862
Dear Mother
I thought I would write you a few lines to let you know how I am getting on I am not well at this time I am not sick much I have pains in my back the Captain says it is only cold Leondus Spencer is very sick and so is Jenner Pearce They are getting better You wrote to me to know if I wanted any thing to write for it I do not want any thing but a pair of shoes I would be glad if you would send me a pair by Jim Thomas the pair I got from the government is to small we left Goldsboro yesterday we will move four miles back to morrow it will be a better than it is here Some of the boys got scared this at a yankey steam boat that bloud down the river this morning Sidney is well Tell Mrs Ellis that Sidney is well and doing well give my Love to at home you and bettie must write to me Tell bettie to give my best respect to miss — and cousand pattie and miss Annie Ellis I must close my letter at present tell Cellus to feed my hogs good
