Item description: Letter, dated 22 February 1864, from Major Charles Scott Venable to Lieutenant General Richard Stoddert Ewell. The letter informs Major Ewell that his commanding General (General Robert E. Lee) would be leaving his position to visit President Jefferson Davis in Richmond, and gives instructions to be followed in his absence.

The General Commanding sets out for Richmond this morning being called thither on business with his Excellency the President. He will be absent several days. He directs me to say that Gen. Chilton will remain here in the office & is instructed to consult with you on all matters of im-portance connected with the army. Should it become necessary, Gen. Lee desires you either to come up to Orange C. H. or to resume the office to your quarters as you may think proper.
