Abstract: Papers, chiefly 1848-1868, of James McDuffee, father-in-law of A. R. Black, for whom Black was executor, relating chiefly to land and money in New Hanover and Sampson counties, N.C.; scattered family correspondence of the Murphy, McDuffee, and Black families of these counties, 1870s; miscellaneous papers, 1907-1929, of Elizabeth Janet Black, Wilmington, N.C., author of historical articles and poems, and member of the National Story Tellers League; and student notebooks, including mathematics notebooks, 1817-1826, and notes made at Bingham School, Alamance County, N.C., late 1860s.
Collection Highlights: In Folder 5, there is a January 1853 list showing the value of James McDuffee’s slaves. There is also a photograph of an African American woman identified as “Aunt Edie”, a former slave.
