Abstract: Francis Withers was a rice planter in Georgetown District, S.C. The collection is an account book showing Withers’s accounts with his Charleston factors; expenditures for his rice plantation and for personal goods; contributions for churches and charities; payments of taxes; and proceeds and disbursements from sales and purchases of slaves and bank stocks. Withers’s representative in Charleston was Lewis & Robertson, which became Lewis, Robertson & Thurston in 1838 and Robertson & Thurston in 1839. Some pages in the volume were later used as a scrapbook by members of the Forster family.
