Abstract: Papers, collected by Mrs. Perrin Quarles, on varied subjects and from varied locations, chiefly legal and personal correspondence, 1869-1913, of Houston S. Gilleylen (1852-1913), lawyer of Aberdeen, Monroe County, Miss., and his father-in-law, William Frank Dowd (1832-1910), lawyer and Confederate colonel. Also included are papers relating to lands ceded by the Chickasaw Indians; two letters from Jefferson Davis, 1849 and 1857; and a variety of scattered papers relating to antebellum North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi.

Collection Highlights: Folder 2 includes scattered letters pertaining to slavery in North Carolina and Alabama (1825-1860) and slave bills of sale (1820, 1854). There is also an 1825 letter concerning Moses, an enslaved man who was promised assistance getting to Norfolk by a Mr. “Eccles(?)” but instead was Camden, South Carolina, without sufficient funds to return home to Florence, Alabama. Moses requested a letter be sent to his master, asking for his help to return to Alabama.
